This movie is based on the Great Rice Riots started by women in Toyama Prefecture during the Taisho era. When I read the script, even if the theme centers on such societal problem, as we go on with the filming though, more comical scenes are added and thus, it becomes unexpectedly a cheerful piece of entertainment. It is a story of women who unified their voices to effect change and I believe watching it will lift people’s spirits up.
We filmed it in Toyama and thus locals there joined as extras for this movie. Everyone was so upbeat I felt the power of the women being portrayed in this movie.
My role here is Matsuura Ito, and as I juggle being a mother of three children, I work as someone who transports heavy straw barrels of rice to protect our families. With no rice to feed the children, it is a role who suffers with hunger every day, so I also refrained from eating rice. It was a tough role to play (laughs). Nutrition was off and the body was on its limits so with that, I realized how important our eating habits are.
It was a set full of women so during our filming breaks, everyone gets riled up with talks about health and beauty stuff. There were talks like when we were removing our sunburn makeup from our faces to our arms and feet, soda water is the best one to use for that (laughs). Since there were also scenes when we have to use our own physical strength, they shared recommended massage stuff. Everyone was exchanging such information.
Right now, even if the perspective that men are the dominant ones in the society still prevails, I think women’s position a hundred years ago are much worse. But even before or in the present, it is the women who faced problems pragmatically. I wish for a society where everyone can work regardless of their gender.
